How Dental Insurance Works

Most dental insurance companies build their plans on a 100-80-50 cost breakdown. Preventive and restorative services fall into the covered categories. Depending on your policy, 80-100% coverage may be available for preventive care, while 50-80% coverage is available for minor and major restorative solutions. These percentages help you determine how much out-of-pocket expense you may incur and what you can do to lower the cost even more (flexible financing).

You should not count on your dental insurance plan covering cosmetic services, as these are often viewed as “nonessential.”

What is the Difference Between Dental and Medical Insurance?

Although your mouth and body are closely connected, medical and dental insurance are drastically different. When using your medical plan, you can expect hospitalizations, specialist visits, and surgical procedures to be covered at a higher percentage than wellness appointments.

With dental insurance, most companies cover preventive care at 80-100%. By keeping your twice-annual visits and staying on top of your oral health, you can reduce your need for restorative treatment and keep more money in your pocket.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

When you enroll in a dental insurance plan, you will notice there are in-network and out-of-network benefits. You decide whether you want to see someone who is contracted with your insurance.

In-Network

By selecting an in-network dentist, you can expect to save on preventive and restorative treatment. Regardless of your recommended treatment (i.e., dental checkup, dental crown, root canal, etc.), you will pay much less because of the agreement between our office and your insurance company.

We are pleased to be in-network with:

  • Delta Dental
  • BlueCross BlueShield
  • Altus Dental
  • GEHA
  • Guardian
  • Principal Financial Group

Out-of-Network

You also have the option to choose someone who is out of network with your plan. This is fine, but you will likely pay more each time you visit. The reason is that your dentist does not have an agreement with your insurance company, so they can choose the kind of fees they want to charge for the services you receive.
